Two Tier DIY Wire Basket

 Here we are starting a new month - June  - so hard to believe summer is upon us already.  We had an interesting holiday weekend in that Tropical Storm Bonnie decided to pay a visit and rain everyday.  And now we are having wonderful summer temps in the high 80's and low 90's.  So summer is in full swing here.  Miss "A" is loving that because that means pool time everyday.

Today I thought I would share with you a project I did a while back but was never able to share.  How to make a standing fruit basket out of a hanging fruit basket.

 I belong to a group of bloggers that do a monthly challenge - this is sponsored by Stephanie at Casa Watkins and is so much fun.  I had purchased the product for this challenge but due to my late health issues was unable to finish it on time for the challenge.  So I thought I would share with you what I did. 

First of all we all purchased this very common hanging wire basket that many people use in their homes and was challenged to make a totally different item out of it.  So I decided to make a standing two tier basket with mine.  This was a very simple project that actually only takes an afternoon to do - you have to wait for paint to dry.

The first step was to take the baskets apart.  The chains just clip on and are easily undone.  Then I spray painted all the baskets with some Valspar Blackboard Black paint.   Hubby cut me a piece of dowel rod measuring 12inches and I spray painted that also. 

After the paint dried it was time to put it together.  These are the parts you will need.  The painted length of dowel rod,  two screws and two washers.

First I turned the middle size basket upside down and placed the largest basket on top along with the dowel rod centered in the largest basket.  I then screwed this in place with a washer to assure the screw not pulling through the holes in the basket.  A better view is in the picture below.

Next I added the mid sized basket to the top and screwed it into place in the same manner.  And that is it - you now have a two tiered wired basket you can use for so many different things.  

I am using mine to hold fruit on our counter as it takes up less space than the previous basket I was using.  I also love that it lets air circulate around the fruit instead of being in contained basket.
